WASHINGTON TWP. – The West Morris Central High School boys’ lacrosse team hasn’t had a losing season since 2011, yet has never finished better than three games over .500 in the past four winning seasons. Last season ended 12-11, but included a trip to the North 3 championship game and a berth in the county quarterfinals.
If ever a West Morris team was primed to not only continue the streak of winning seasons but do so in a more dominant fashion, it just might be this one. Ten of 11 starters return, including all but 10 of its goals and 15 of its points.
The front line will feature seniors Cooper Sloan (39 goals, 32 assists) and Ryan Antonelle (18-36) and junior Garrett Izzo (32-12). The entire midfield returns as well, including seniors Kyle Skurchak (29-9) and Ryan Pruss (12-2) as well as junior Cole Draghi (11-6). Christian Atalese will anchor long stick midfield, while the defense will be in the able hands of seniors Patrick Kennedy and Brian Santos.
The lone graduating starter is defenseman Michael Gutkind, but senior Eric Huyler gained valuable experience during Gutkind’s injury last season. Providing additional depth along the back line are seniors Peter Trethway, Noah Hollander and Tyler Kren and junior Mike Egan.
Senior Joe Reilly returns in goal after stopping nearly two-thirds of the shots he faced and allowing fewer than six goals per game.
West Morris also lost senior midfielders Blake Izzo and James Bissell to graduation but also return junior lettermen Jake Congdon (5-3) and Ryan Finley (5-2) and seniors Eric Moore and Ryan Forbes.
Among the notable numbers from last season were Antonlle’s 36 assists, third best in school history and Kennedy’s 125 ground balls, good for fourth best at West Morris.
Sloan’s 32 assists were sixth best at the school, and Sloan’s 71 points last year (ninth most at the school) and 62 career assists (seventh best) also popped up on the school charts. Reilly had 204 saves, eighth best among Wolfpack goalies.
West Morris opened on Wednesday at Pope John and hosts Morristown, the team they beat to reach the sectional finals last spring, on Saturday in the home opener.

LAST SEASON: West Morris went 12-11 last season and reached the North Jersey, Group 3 final before falling to Ridgewood. The Wolfpack also made the quarterfinals of the Morris County Tournament before running into Morristown-Beard.
CONFERENCE AND CLASSIFICATION: Fitch-Pitt Division; North Jersey, Group 3
HEAD COACH: Rob Goodwin
TOP PLAYERS BACK: West Morris returns 10 of its 11 starters from last season, including leading scorer Cooper Sloan, who tallied 39 goals and 32 assists last season. Fellow senior Ryan Antonelle (18g, 36a) and junior Garrett Izzo (32g, 12a) bolster the attack, while seniors Christian Atalese (2g, 1a), Kyle Skurchak (29g, 9a) and Ryan Pruss (12g, 2a) and junior Cole Draghi (11g, 6a) provide support from the midfield. Defensively, the Wolfpack is led by seniors Patrick Kennedy and Brian Santos. The squad’s eighth senior starter, Joe Reilly, returns in goal.
OUTLOOK FOR 2016: With so many players back for another go, West Morris should be able to build on its successful 2015 campaign. The team graduated just 10 goals and 15 points worth of offensive production, which means almost all of the firepower returns. If the Wolfpack’s attackmen keep up their scoring pace and if the veteran defensive corps can use its experience to tighten up a little bit, deep runs in the county and state tournaments are well within reach once again this season.
GAMES TO WATCH: The Wolfpack opens on March 31 at Pope John and faces early games against county-rivals like Chatham (April 5), Morristown (April 2) and Mountain Lakes (April 7 and 16).
As a reminder, the West Morris Central Boys Lacrosse Faceoff Dinner begins at 6:00pm on Wednesday, 3/30.
