WASHINGTON TWP. – West Morris boys lacrosse is used to scoring goals.
It’s not surprising that in the off-season they also reached one, and then some.
The Wolfpack Lacrosse Booster Club had a goal of raising $12,000 for a new scoreboard, extra protective turf blankets and a new public address system before the spring season began. As of Dec. 14, the GoFundMe site set up by the boosters had surpassed the goal, raising $14,045 from 72 donations. The GoFundMe site was started on Nov. 1.
“The success we enjoy was the result of the entire committee’s dedication to the effort,’’ said booster president Jim Skurchak. “Many members socialized the GoFundMe site while others were critical in securing our corporate sponsors.’’
Exigent Technologies out of Mount Arlington was the booster’s platinum sponsor and will be advertised on the scoreboard.
The extra money that was raised will not be wasted. Additional funds will be used to cover costs for customizing the scoreboard and any unforeseen installation costs. If there is any money left, the club will set it aside for a head start on next year’s fundraising efforts. Every year the parents club raises money to secure indoor space for practices and pay two assistant coaches.
Both the scoreboard and turf blankets were considered to be near necessities by the booster club. The Wolfpack scoreboard, located on the grass lacrosse fields behind the football field, is at least a decade old and has shown signs of faltering.
“It has several digits missing on the numbers,’’ Skurchak said. “Sometimes you can’t even tell what the score is.’’
The turf blankets will be used to supplement ones the school already owns during the winter months and will protect areas on the field which need them most.
The Wolfpack Booster Club traditionally takes on one capital improvement project a year. There are 66 boys athletes that play for varsity, junior varsity or freshman teams which helps the booster support. Their fund raising efforts have come with the full support of the West Morris Central Athletic Department.
